Education
Students enrolled in K-12 attend schools within the Dysart Unified School District No. 89. The district has seven elementary (K-8) schools and one high school (9-12). Surprise is home to a variety of higher education institutions, including community colleges, vocational schools, private institutions and state universities. State universities include Arizona State University West and Rio Salado College.
Parks & Recreation
There are a number of urban parks that offer a variety of recreational opportunities. Several of the parks feature hiking trails that provide hikers with an excellent view of the Valley of the Sun from while taking an invigorating trek surrounded by desert landscapes and vegetation. It rarely rains so the excellent climate is an added incentive.
There are many fascinating areas within easy driving distance from Surprise, such as Sedona, the Grand Canyon and Tucson. For a remarkable scenic route, the Apache Trail Loop Drive covers an incredible amount of terrain. Starting in Apache Junction and traveling to the west of Scottsdale, the route consists of a twisting course through canyons and ridges. The northern part of the route links the Valley of the Sun to Theodore Roosevelt Lake via Goldfield (with its reconstructed ghost town), Needle Vista Viewpoint and the northern slopes of the Superstition Mountains.
Attractions & Points of Interest
Cultural opportunities abound in Surprise, such as the ASU Sundome Center for the Performing Arts is located in nearby Sun City West. The Sundome is known to host popular entertainers, as well as national and international traveling shows. The Sun Bowl in Sun City is about a 10 minute drive and provides a beautiful outdoor setting for concerts. The amphitheater hosts performances by international and local performers.
The Valley of the Sun has an amazing amount of things to see and do for any visitor to the area. As well as the legendary golf courses, Phoenix has a great selection of museums and galleries and some incredible urban parks that bring the beautiful flora of the desert right into town.
